Princess Leia!

Getting psyched for the new Star Wars movie coming this Christmas!
I don't have very high hopes in seeing it this Christmas (all the manic Star Wars fans will probably buy out all the tickets way before it even opens) but Star Wars has always been a significant part of my childhood, so I'm still excited for it, especially knowing that some of the actors/characters from the first movies will be a part of it!

Princess Leia - Medium: Pencil

I drew Princess Leia, based on this photograph of her below.

Carrie Fisher in costume

I think I've given up on drawing realistically, because literally everything I try to draw just turns into a cartoon style. Well, no, I have not given up. I've simply accepted that I have a certain style that seems to be what I'm best at, so I've decided I'll be happy with it instead of disappointed when my drawings don't turn out as life-like as I'd hoped. So now I'm trying to focus on my symmetry. You can see in the drawing that her face is ever so slightly asymmetrical still, but I think I've improved since my last drawings and I hope to improve even more on this skill in the future!

Hope you like her, have a majestic day, and may the force be with you always.

family

I wanted to do one last sketch for #sketchtober

Here's another really rough sketch of a cute little family. Like I said, its very rough, so the proportions are odd and there's still a lot of guess-lining. Especially the wrists. Just look at the wrists. AGH THE WRISTS.

I honestly don't have much to say about this one. I felt rather impersonal when I was drawing it so there's nothing too meaningful in it. Just a young family with a fairly balanced distribution of genetic traits, the little girl having her mom's blonde hair and her dad's dark eyes, and the baby having dark hair like its dad. I don't know if I'll ever finish this one, I'm not really feeling it.

You know when an artist makes something phenomenal? Well for every phenomenal piece there's probably about forty half-done sketches that they just weren't really feeling the heart for.

I'd like this blog to be something that lets people see the not so perfect side of artists, where they make messes, where they don't always like what they make, and maybe some looks at the unfinished products. That has been in a way encouraging to me as an aspiring artist, because it shows that even my artistic heroes have their off days - they just usually go unpublished.

I hope you enjoyed your October. Mine was full of activity that seemed to happen long ago, but still the month was over in a snap.

be bold. make messes.

The Bear Brothers!

Sup. Still doing this #sketchtober thing so I thought I'd just show you this little project I'm currently working on - you kind of a get an insider's look for this one, because it's not finished yet, still needs some adjustments and refinements.

But anyway, if any of you have seen the show "We Bare Bears" you are probably pretty well acquainted with these guys.

The oldest of the bear brothers is Grizzly (a.k.a. "Grizz"), he watches out for the other two, being the most protective and most responsible. He can be a little bossy at times, but its only because he wants what's best for his little brothers.

The middle child is Panda, or "Pan Pan" who sometimes acts like the youngest. He's a little goofy, just wants to have fun, and dreams to be famous on social media, always checking his phone, which he claims is his "life and soul in rectangular form." He can get a little out of control with his ambitions sometimes, but he ultimately is a sweet little guy who just needs some love and guidance.

Ice Bear is the youngest, and the quietest of the group, but in reality, the foundation of the family (literally, when they're getting around in their "bearstack" as seen above.) He cooks, he cleans, and he has a very valuable intuition that has gotten the bears out of a few scrapes. He doesn't say very much at all, and is a little mysterious, but voices his opinion when it counts, and though he isn't very expressive, he has an underlying care for his two older bros that needs no words to shine through.

Anyway, I like these three, so I decided to try and draw them in human form. Like I said its a working progress, but here you go.

"We Bare Bears" Human form rough sketch - Medium: Pencil

Pan Pan, with his mobile device in his hand, and that dopey smile on his face.
My hope is to color it, so he'll have black hair, a white vest, a black bowtie, and a grey dress shirt, with (I can't decide) green, brown, or black eyes.
Grizz, with that big brotherly grin on his face - his hair will be dark brown, his eyes light brown, his corduroy jacket another shade of brown, and his sweater beneath a drab green or goldenrod perhaps. His hat is either burgundy, drab, or gray.
Ice Bear looking his solemn mysterious self, with platinum blonde hair, piercing blue eyes, a pale blue hoodie, and a white apron. If you look in the full picture above, you can see I'm planning on having him wear oven mitts and have a tray of muffins, or some sort of food.
So that's what I got. Thanks for stopping by

Roslin

She's not my best but I wanted to post another for #sketchtober.

The dress is inspired by one of the outfits in the movie Love & Mercy about Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys.

The glasses were to make her face not look so strange on her head, because something wasn't working with her forehead here. The short hair is because I'm thinking of cutting my hair soon, and was just drawing out a possible style.

So she's really not much of a solid character, just a figure with a bunch of experiments thrown on her. But for the love of it, let's just call her Roslin.

you can't spell imagine without magi, and we all know you can't spell magic without magi either, so... obviously those to are connected - make magic: imagine

i tried, guys.

Kyel and Vinn

#sketchtober, another pair (the previous pair I've featured here was Castle and Britney). I've really been into drawing pairs of people lately. Sometimes I draw siblings or couples, but usually, such as these two, its a pair of friends.

Kyel and Vinn (Medium: Pencil)
Also, I realized there's so many ways to spell Kyle. Kaisle, Kiyell, Kaiel, Kaielle (girly), etc. So I wanted to pick a more unique spelling. I stuck with one of the simpler alternate spellings - Kyel - so as to not confuse people too much. I like this spelling a lot because it seems more accurate to the actual pronunciation of the name (KY-ull).

In this picture, Kyel is giving his energetic friend Vinn an interesting look. I can't really figure out what his expression is honestly. It seems sort of dazed and emotional (mainly because of the eyes), but at the same time tired and sarcastic (the eyebrow position and the slightly lowered eyelids), and all of it with a hint of mild amusement (especially in the mouth area; he's not smiling, but it looks as though he may be just about to).

As for Vinn, you can see that his personality is quite different from Kyel's. He has an expression of vibrant energy glowing in his eyes, a bit of a mischeivous hint probably due to the eye brow position and big, white-toothed, slightly crooked smile, but also a sweet sense of amiable innocence (probably because of the nose, the dimple, and the WIDE open eyes breaking the fourth wall.)

I don't usually spend this much time analyzing my own art (well, that's a lie, I just don't usually write it down for people to see.) But I figured, I always love it when people look at my drawings and say what they think of the personality of whatever I've drawn. So maybe for a change you would all like to see what I think of the character of my drawings. I certainly had fun doing it, and usually when I draw things I don't end up figuring out their personality until they're all finished up.

Anyway, I know this post was long and that's okay if you didn't read the whole thing, but I had a lot of fun with it and wouldn't be afraid to do it again. And if you DID read the whole thing - thanks! That means a lot, and I hope you enjoyed it and were inspired somehow :)

Well that's all for #sketchtober today. Hope you liked Kyel and Vinn.

serious bear

Another one for #sketchtober

I just watched the live action Cinderella and my favorite scene has to be the quirky painter scene. It was so odd and out of place and random that I actually found it rather funny, especially when he plummeted in his swing and said "OHH KAY... AHAH... LIKE I AM LIT'RALLY ON THE GROUND RIGHT NOW."
I don't know why I'm even mentioning this. It's just so random there's really no good transition into mentioning it, but anyway, if you see the writing on the paper it says "I am lit'rally a bear right now." And so that's the whole reason why in case you were wondering.

you're welcome.

Have a.... magical day.

3 for the 3rd

Three more sketches for #sketchtober. Technically the first two are from late September, but I wanted to post them, so better late than never. The third one came to me today.

Loris Schull. A great smile. Medium: Pencil

She's had several different names so far. Mina I think is most fitting. Medium: Pencil

Definitely a princess. My family had a ball trying to figure out her ethnicity. Medium: Pencil

A lot of pen artists I'm aware of are doing something called #inktober in which they create ink drawings throughout the month (a lot of them one for each day). Some of them are really cool, so I'll put a few below for you to see.

Shady Character by Julius Genosas

Cthulhu Cat by Bryon Rempel

I guess October is an inspiration month for a lot of people!

#Sketchtober

Rhett and Link are doing something called #sketchtober in which they will be posting various comedic youtube sketches. Here is there first one. It's hilarious and I approve.

I thought this was interesting because I was thinking of starting my own #sketchtober as well, only of course with drawing sketches and not video sketches. I don't know how often I will be posting sketches, but Autumn has me inspired to draw more! So here's the first of hopefully many more sketches this month. Happy October!

Medium is Pencil and crayon

I always loved going to pumpkin patches as a kid (still do!) and just like this kid here, I always picked out the biggest one I could carry to take home and carve. Fun times.

Remember: Boredom is not a bad thing! It's an opportunity to do something majestic! It all depends on what you choose to do with your boredom.

"Castle and Britney"

So. Adorable. AUGH.

These are my products from late nights. It always amazes me that things like this can come from a pencil. A PENCIL. a skinny wood thing with graphite inside and rubber at the top.
For color I used crayons, my favorites.

paint

I like painting objects. I like finding objects or buying them or salvaging them from being thrown away, and then painting them.

When I was little I used to paint rocks, and bird houses, and acorns, and the shells of garden snails.

I still often do that nowadays (but there aren't any garden snails where I live now,) but mainly I paint old objects.

For instance...

I have taken hubcaps off the side of the highway. I've purchased old cord phones at thrift stores. I've even saved a dusty old computer keyboard. All of these so I could paint them in cool colorful ways.

Aside from painting these sort of things, I have also painted the legs of my art table, the underside of one of my drawers, and went on a hand-printing frenzy with my cousin inside my closet. It's like a cave from Brother Bear in there now.

I have an old typewriter. It is manual, and mint colored, and makes that pleasant little "ding!" sound when you reach the edge of the page.

I don't plan on painting that. But I do have a piano that most of my family dislikes. When I move out I might take it with me, and go on the biggest funnest painting craze all over it when its fully mine.

I think when I have my own place, I'll design a room with completely white furniture, white walls, white floors, and a white ceiling. Then I'll buy tons of different paint colors. Then I'll bring a bunch of friends over and tell them to wear clothes they don't care about. Then all day we'll just go crazy in there, painting and splattering and having a colorful blast all over everything.

On a smaller scale, you can get an amazing variety of paint colors at walmart, in those little bottles they sell for at cheapest 50 cents each.

Don't just paint things. Paint ON things. It's fun you should try it.

Seagull: It's a song, actually

Seagulls are never lost at sea;
That's where they belong.
I knew right from the start you'd be a seagull
(As soon as your wings got big and strong.)

Yeah I knew you'd want to fly
With that raspberry sky
And that you’d hardly stay to say goodbye....
but that's alright...

They tell me that they're sorry for me;
So sorry that I lost you at sea.
But I know better, (I'm not a fool)
You’re not lost at all,

Because you're a seagull.

End. (By me, A.K. Huie)

This seems to belong better in 12inchesinafoot. Maybe I'll put it there too.

For now, revel in your own majesty, but don't let that stop you from making a maniacal mess! Be the bloody red queen of whatever it is you do best.

"Wendell"

Medium is pencil and maroon Crayola crayon.
Isn't he just great? :)

Wave hello to random people wherever you go today. If you can get three smiles you are a champ.

'Shelby'

Humans are beautiful creatures. So unique individually in ways of personality, style and physique. I visited a church a little while ago and just had to get this girl down on paper.

Like most people I draw, I never actually went up to meet her (once you meet and talk to the person, you see them in a different way, so its harder to draw them objectively [by what you merely see] )
So, since I didn't get up close, here's what I got from just observing.

Dunkin' Donuts and Taco Bell

A peculiarly wide gait for someone of her size (about 4' 11" I'd say)

She plays bass for the church, on a dark green bass guitar

She also helps take down the stage after the service

Bored? Make the most random collage possible out of magazine, newspaper, and old book clippings. But don't stop there! Also glue on small random objects that you find outside or in your house, or lying on the floor of a grocery store.

Stay majestic!

A cute little nerd came by today

Do something maniacal with an empty cardboard box today. Pride in your results.

Even More Char-Con with the lovely Sparkatrina :)

On a Tight Rope! She loves a challenge.

Tire Swing! I've never heard her scream like this xD She usually tries to be tough, but I think she liked it.

Gave her some of my homework. It didn't end quite as planned :P

Stay majestic everyone!

More Char-Con (Character Concept)

Here's more of her. Laura and I were thinking hard the other night and we came up with a wonderfully crazy name for her: Sparkatrina Emmagenta Groohay
She's really starting to grow on me. As you can see she has a sassy tough girl side, and a crazy cute girl side, and then something in between that summarizes a funny kid who never learned what growing up was about. I'm hoping to draw more soon, maybe some with color.

Spaghetti :)

A quick char-con (Character Concept)

She just popped into my head late last night so I had to get her on paper right away. That's why it's a little messy in some places.
Can't think of what to call her, but I'd like to do some more work with her and see how she develops.

I love her eyebrows

HAVE IT

Yeah, happy hypothetical new year everyone.
Happy restart of our theoretical calendars that is. It's not like time restarted itself back to a year ago. What even is a year? Just a chunk of time that we put a name on. Really all we're celebrating is a new day. And what even is a day? The sun coming up. This day really isn't any different from yesterday. We don't have a new sun coming up now. It's the same sun we've had for centuries. But then again, what is a century?
Alright, enough of the questions. To use the language of the now, Happy "New Year" and I hope you have a great one... heck I hope the rest of your entire life is just swell, why only limit it to a year?
Of course what is me saying "have a great year" going to affect? Probably nothing. You're not going to make it a priority to have a great year because I just told you so. In fact, I don't WANT you to make it a priority. Don't have a Happy New Year. Have a Happy New Day. I want you to enjoy each day individually and find something awesome in between all the scrapes and scars you might collect along the way. So yeah! Don't have a Happy New Year. Have a Happy Collection of Individual Days, and when another year has passed, I want you to be able to look back at some of those days you experience and say, "yeah, that was a great one."
Go have that.
As for resolutions, I also don't see much point in those. Why do we all try to make one at the beginning of the year? Resolutions are things that should be come up with from a mix of deep thinking, impulse, sudden changes, constant reminders, and surges of motivation. If that happens for you around this time, then great. But I make resolutions when they come to me and I know I'm ready and equipped for them. This could be any time of the said year, because things that make a resolution - inspiration, motivation, dedication, can often die when forced and are not bound by our rule of time.
I hope you accomplish goals this year, and I'm sure you will. I hope you make great progress in things, but I'm sure in other things you may fall back and have regrets. It happens to everyone, just remember that nothing is a complete failure, because you can learn something from virtually everything.
What would be a failure is you failing to apply what you've learned from past mistakes. Mistakes are a hard earned gift, don't just throw them away. So make goals any time, accomplish them some time, make mistakes, apply learning, and always look to the next day. The future is a big blackish thing to look at and most times you won't get anything out of staring at it all day. So just look to the next day and know that the same old sun is going to rise, and that there's always time for love.
Off the top of my head, here's what I learned this past year:
1. It doesn't matter who they are, where they've come from, or what they've done, all people in this world matter because they were made for a purpose whether we know that purpose or not, so its best to treat them that way.
2. Apparently Taylor Swift has no belly button.

CARPE DIEM EVERYONE!
STAY MAJESTIC.
